Central Ohio Junior Committee
The Create Columbus Commission funded the Central Ohio Junior Committee in 2014-2015 to create a short-film documentary exploring neurological disorders and mental health challenges among young professionals in Central Ohio. Brave young people told their stories on camera in an effort to reduce the stigma and create a much needed sense of community among our generation. This film, Elephants in the Room, premiered at the Gateway Film Center in October 2015.
The ability for these young professionals to tell their stories in a way that truly speaks to each one of the viewers would not have been possible without the support of the CCC grant program and commissioners who supported the project every step of the way.
DVDs are currently available for purchase. If you are interested in hosting your own screening, please visit the film’s website.
Founded in 2012, LINK22 is a program of Starfish Alliance that connects youth in foster care and young adults who experienced foster care with a community mentor, social entrepreneur training and monthly leadership seminars. In addition, LINK22 helps connect young adults who experienced foster care with housing, transportation, education and employment resources, as needed. Create Columbus funding enabled Starfish Alliance to launch its inaugural year of LINK22 programming and provided start-up funds for its coffee bar social enterprise.
The Create Columbus Commission invested in Besa’s volunteer infrastructure – enabling the development of exceptional volunteer experiences and strategic partnerships with local nonprofits. Prior to the grant, Besa curated 85 annual service projects for 1,000 YPs in Columbus. Through funding and collaboration, Besa has reached annual milestones of 250 service projects, 2,500 volunteers and an econmic impact of $200,000.
